My honey hates stuff. So when we moved in together, he had a really big problem with my collection of tiki mugs. Basically, he doesn't like decorations, or anything he considers a knick-knack. "If it isn't useful, we don't need it," he'd say. Well, he tried and tried to convince me to get rid of the tiki collection, but there was just no way I was parting with them. Sooo... I was cruising around Target one day yes, Target, because that's where foxy broads go for home decor and inspiration and it hit me. I was going to turn them into planters. I don't know why I didn't think of it before. They're the perfect size. So here's what you'll need:
A small bag of potting soil Gravel, rocks or glass marbles A young plant that is in a pot no larger than 4 inches. A Tiki mug Here's a little bit of a plant tip. Choose slow-growing varieties so the little fellows don't get too cramped in their new fantastic vintage ceramic home. Jade plants, cactus, English ivy and asparagus ferns are pretty safe bets. They also don't need a lot of love to thrive. Okay, so fill the mug 1/3 full of either rocks, gravel or glass marbles. These will act as drainage so that your plants will not die or get root rot if you water them too much. It'll also save you the trauma of drilling a hole in the bottom of the mug to let the extra water out. Add a shallow layer of potting mix. Maybe about an inch worth in a standard size mug. Add just enough that the plant will have a little bit of wiggle room and be flush with the top of the mug once you stick it in there. Remove your plant from its plastic container and pot in the mug. Fill in any holes with dirt. Now water it. Voila! |
